Wool Quality Guide
systems to ensure the Australian wool industry with efficiency and profitability

T
o assist in the development of quality systems, IWS has prepare the Guide to Australian Wool Quality to highlight the quality issues faced by sectors in the early stages of the wool pipeline.

T
he Guide is not prescriptive. IWS does not have a regulatory role in the wool industry. However, it does have a recognised and respected leadership role, and the Guide has been developed:

to encourage participants in the wool industry to adopt quality schemes and seek continuous improvement;
to present the vision for Australian wool quality to customers worldwide;
to increase the awareness across sectors of quality issues within sectors;
to facilitate the flow of information up and down the wool pipeline;
to highlight the areas in which research needs to be conducted in the future.

Using the Guide
The Guide is in two parts. The first is a summary document. It gives background to and an overview of the nature and structure of the Australian wool industry. It focuses on quality issues for customers and on linkages between the different sectors of the wool pipeline.

T
he second part of the Guide consists of five modules which describe in detail the quality issues faced by these industry functions:
wool production
assembly of wool
purchasing and selling
shipment preparation
early stage processing

T
he modules are designed to assist businesses in these sectors to improve their own quality management systems. It is anticipated that members of each sector will study their own Module and look for the key quality issues which have been identified as important. It is also anticipated that they will look at the other Modules, particularly those on either side of their own, to identify the quality issues in the other sectors which have an impact on their own operations.

T
he Modules have been prepared by industry experts who consulted widely within their sector to research the issues. Draft documents were then networked widely to make sure they covered the main issues.

T
he format of the Guide was chosen to make it easy to update sections. It is anticipated that changes will happen very quickly and the Guide could easily become out of date. By subscribing to the Guide you are assured of receiving all updates.
