Windows 95/98 Internet Setup Instructions





This page will help you setup your windows 95/98 computer to use the Internet with Australia Online.

Some examples are included to make stepping through this process as easy as possible.

There may be some minor differences from the screens that you see here the screen you have at home. This may particularly be the case for those who have the original version of Windows 95. (Version A). However, the functionality is the same.

To begin, double click on the "My Computer" icon.




Then double click on the "Dial up Networking" icon. If this is not in your "My Computer" section you will need to install it. To do so click here. (Link to small section explaining how to install dial up networking)

  • Once in "Dial up Networking" double click on the "Make a new Connection" icon and fill in the details as prompted.
 
 
  • Above, type Australia Online in the "computer you are dialing field", select your modem from the list and then click on next.
  • If your modem is not installed, click here. You will know if your modem is installed if there is a modem available to be selected from the list
  • Choose the corresponding phone number for your city. Replace <phone number> with the correct phone number. Then click on next.

  • Above, click on Finish.
  • You should now see an icon in your Dial up Networking section, called "Australia Online".
  • Right click on this icon (above) and (left) click on properties.
  • Some information about your mouse. Usually, for those who use the mouse with their right hand, there are at least two buttons. The button on the left (index finger), is the button that is "double clicked" with. The right mouse button is furthest to the right, and is commonly used for configuring icons making short cuts and going into the "properties" of programs. Those who use the mouse with their left hand will be used to "right" clicking for creating short cuts, and going into properties etc.
  • You will now see a screen like this…
  • Please ensure that "use area code and country code when dialing" is NOT ticked.
  • Click on the "server types" section which will be a tab at the top of your screen like above and below, or a button at the bottom of the section.
  • Above you will see an example of a server types section. People with Windows 95 will have a few less tick boxes available. The only two that need to be ticked are "enable software compression" and "TCP/IP". Ensure that all others are NOT ticked. Please ensure that PPP is selected in the "types of dial up server" section. Then Click on "OK".
  • This completes the dial up connection set up for Win 95/98.
  • In order to dial up, double click on the "Australia Online" icon and type in your username and password.
  • Then click on the connect button (as seen below).
