Modem Troubleshooting
Internal win-modems, sometimes known as win-modems or soft-modems, are modem devices which rely on your computer's processor for much of their own processing needs. Using software, they switch all modem protocols, error correction and data compression tasks to your computer’s CPU. In simple terms, this means win-modems rely on your computers processing power to do their thinking for them. This differs from traditional modem devices which contain their own microprocessor and hardware for handling modem protocols, error correction, data compression and the like. Win-modems are becoming increasingly popular due to their lower cost. However, despite the advantage in price, win-modems have a number of limitations, most notably, the reliance on your computer's process for much of its processing needs. This reliance on a host processor, slows performance on the host machine, and increases the amount of processing speed required of the host computer. Most vendors recommend a pentium processor and at least 16Mb of RAM.
Furthermore, performance between win-modems and regular modems may differ depending upon less than optimal line conditions. In tests performed by zdnet, a number of win-modems failed to negotiate modem protocols with less than optimal phone line conditions, and in a number of occasions dropped the phone call altogether. Further to this, win-modems have been design for use only with Microsoft Windows, which means there may be compatibility problems with other operating systems such as Windows NT and Linux. For the optimum performance of your Internet connection, consider the purchase of a dedicated external modem. External modems do cost a little more, however, when one considers the importance of reliable modem performance with regard to the quality of your Internet experience, the investment is justified.
