Mac OS 8.1 Setup




This page will assist those people with an Apple Macintosh computer using Mac OS 8.1, to setup their Internet connection with Australia Online.

The Macintosh Operating system can vary greatly from one version to the next, in what applications are used to assist you in connecting to the Internet. The information is still the same but the way it is requested can vary.

Below you will find three screen shot's, ppp, tcp/ip and modem. These can also be called macppp, easyppp, and mac-tcp/ip. If you find that these screens do not look like what you have on your system try one of the other Mac help pages, or call our technical support line (1800 621 258 - 03 9686 1051) and we will assist you any way we can.

All the following programs are situated in the control-panel. The can be reached by going into the Apple on the top left of your screen, going to control-panel and clicking on the relevant application.
  • Open up ppp.
  • Type in your username, as shown below. Your username was given to you when you signed up with Australia Online, below, you see peterh which is as example only.
  • Type in your password. Please ensure all CaSiNg is correct. The login to our servers is CaSe SenSitIve.
  • The phone number for Melbourne customers is 03 9673 8400.
    For those in Sydney dial 02 8425 9600.
  • Click on the box on the top left of the screen, to close the window down.
  • Click on SAVE, to save the changes you made.
  • Next, you need to open up TCP/IP. To do this, go to the Apple, then to the Control-panel, and then to TCP/IP.
  • You will see a screen like the one below.
  • Connect Via needs to be set to PPP.
  • Set Configure to Using PPP Server
  • In the Name server addr.: field type 203.4.248.25, and press enter, then type 203.4.248.32.
  • Next, type in the Additional Search domains: field, ozonline.com.au
  • Press on the box in the top left of the Window to close the screen. Click on SAVE.
  • Now we have to ensure that your modem is setup correctly.
  • Open the Modems section by clicking on the Apple in the top left hand corner; click on Control-Panel, and then Modems.
  • In this section you need to ensure that the modem is connected to the correct port. There are usually two choices, printer port and modem port. If when dialing you receive no response from the modem, and it does not dial, you may wish to change this setting from modem port to printer port or visa-versa.
  • The other items you may wish to set are: the modem to your correct type of modem, including brand and speed; sound, on off, and dialing with tone or pulse.
  • Click on the top left hand corner to close the window and then click on SAVE.


This completes the MacOS 8.1 setup.
