Hazardous Substances in the Workplace is a programme aimed at ensuring that all people work safely with hazardous substances and dangerous goods and understand the risks involved. The programme typically extends over 3 - 4 hours but may be tailored to suit specific circumstances.

The programme typically consists of the following:
Understand the nature of hazardous substances
Understand the fundamental differences between hazardous substances and
dangerous goods
Understand terms related to health effects of hazardous substances
Understand the nature of all Classes of dangerous goods
Be able to recognise the properties of dangerous goods from standard markings
and labels
Understand the basic safety procedures required for the storage and handling of
hazardous substances and dangerous goods
Understand risk and safety phrases for workplace labelling of hazardous
substances and additional requirements for dangerous goods
Understand the employer’s responsibility with regard to risk assessment of
hazardous substances and dangerous goods
Understand the employee’s responsibility with regard to the storage and handling of hazardous substances and dangerous goods
Know the procedures to be followed in the event of an accident involving hazardous substances and dangerous goods
